Looking At Your Hand: A Note For Practice

Let's talk about this last joint of your finger. For all the instruments we teach, this little spot is incredibly important. For piano, I see many students allowing this joint to bend backwards. For violin, students will often fail to curve this joint enough to keep the finger tall and accurate on the left hand. For guitar, I often see students lay the last section of their finger (or the pad of the finger) flat on the string, instead of pulling the wrist around and making the finger stand tall for accuracy. So here's a little reminder to pay attention to this very important part of your hand! Check it out as you practice this week: is this joint doing what it should be while you play?
